Brookings Institution Echidna Global Scholars Visiting Fellowship Program in the USA for 2022/2023

The Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings’ Echidna Global Scholars Visiting Fellowship Program aims to stimulate and magnify the influence of regional leaders working to achieve gender equality in and through education throughout the Global South.

Echidna Global Scholars develop their leadership and evidence-based policy skills throughout a six-month fellowship, conduct individual research aimed at enhancing learning opportunities and life outcomes for girls, young women, and gender non-conforming people, increase their pathways for impact, and develop their knowledge of gender and global education issues. Scholars join the Echidna Alumni Network after completing the fellowship, a developing community of practice that aims to promote their considerable, ongoing, and combined influence on gender-transformative education both locally and globally.

The Echidna Global Scholars Visiting Programme, which was founded in 2012, has hosted ten cohorts of fellows and currently supports a network of 33 graduates from 20 different countries.

The fellowship for Echidna Global Scholars comprises three separate phases:

  1. Before moving to one’s home country: With assistance from the Center for Universal Education (CUE), scholars start a rigorous period of data collecting and analysis in-country, which is supplemented by several online workshops, group working meetings, and one-on-one consultations. Scholars begin building their impact plan by identifying and interacting with local stakeholders from their home country. They are also introduced to the leadership principles and techniques that will be the focus of the leadership development program during the fellowship.
  2. Washington, D.C. residency: Scholars concentrate on broadening reach and impact through the publication and dissemination of their research through Brookings’ multimedia platforms, strategic impact capacity building, leadership development, and networking. By teaching best practices for analyzing, communicating, and leveraging research for policy and key audiences, as well as by expanding scholars’ networks and promoting visibility through Brookings convenings and strategic collaborations—culminating in the girls’ education research and policy symposium—the residency phase is intended to help scholars strengthen their impact.
  3. Post-residency (in home country): For the two years following post-residency, the CUE team offers specialized assistance to alumni as they carry out impact plans based on their research. Scholars use the knowledge, abilities, and connections developed throughout the fellowship to spark change in their regional contexts through strategic advice, group working sessions, and leadership development support.
